T he Alexander Technique brings assistance to a wide range of needs. Most often, people turn to it because of a persistent health issue or injury that seems resistant to other means. It is also commonly associated with back pain, since A.T. teachers often appear particularly upright – leading to the idea that it must be about having good posture, assumed to be “good for the back.”

In fact, both of these quests for help, though often met with good results, are secondary effects of the Technique. What you learn in a lesson is something more fundamental: how to reduce the impact of habitually holding onto physical – and mental – tension. When this is addressed through the Technique, it has the primary effect of creating a sense of wellbeing – a lightness in the self that supports whatever you wish to achieve, whether recovering from injury, working with greater ease, or refining performance.

With its remedial benefits for health well documented and tested, it is perhaps no surprise to find the Technique also valued in fields of performance – for musicians, actors, singers, dancers, and sportspeople alike.
